James Williams
Coach James Williams enters his 28th year in coaching with a proven
legacy of building championship-caliber programs rooted in character,
discipline, and excellence. For the past 16 years, he has served as the Head
Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at Thurgood Marshall High
School, guiding the Buffalos through one of the most successful eras in program
history.
When Coach Williams arrived at Marshall in 2010, the Buffalos were in
full rebuilding mode. Under his leadership, the program established a
foundation centered on character, discipline, and hard work. In 2012, Marshall
posted an impressive 13–1 record, earning Coach Williams recognition as
District 22-4A Coach of the Year, VYPE Magazine Co-Coach of the Year, and a
finalist for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s Coach of the Year Award.
Coach Williams continued to elevate the program throughout the decade.
Marshall made consecutive playoff appearances in 2013 and 2014, and he was
selected to coach in the prestigious Bayou Bowl All-Star Game. In 2015, his
program earned the Touchdown Club of Houston Sportsmanship Award (3rd Place),
and that same year he was named to the Greater Houston Football Coaches
Association (GHFCA) Board of Directors, while also serving on the Touchdown
Club’s Player of the Year Committee.
The Buffalos’ momentum surged again in 2016 with an 11–3 season and a
trip to the state quarterfinals. Coach Williams received multiple honors that
year, including the Houston Texans Coach of the Week Award and the “Be a
Champion” Leadership Award, and the team was named Dave Campbell’s Army 5A
School of the Week (Week 14). At season’s end, he was recognized as the Houston
Chronicle All-Greater Houston Coach of the Year.
Marshall’s rise continued with another state quarterfinal appearance in
2017 and a 10–3 finish. In 2018, after years of steady building, Coach Williams
led the Buffalos to the State Championship game, earning his second Houston
Chronicle All-Greater Houston Coach of the Year honor. That same year, he
served as President of the GHFCA, reinforcing his influence and leadership
across the region.
The Buffalos returned to the State Championship again in 2019, marking
back-to-back title game appearances. Most recently, Coach Williams completed
five years of service on the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA)
Region 5 Board of Directors, further cementing his state-wide leadership
footprint.
Prior to his tenure at Marshall, Coach Williams served as Defensive
Coordinator at Hightower High School, where the team reached the State
Championship against Allen High School. Before Hightower, he spent two years at
Manvel High School, where he was named Teacher of the Year for the 2007–2008
school year, affirming his deep commitment to both athletic and academic
excellence.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Coach Williams holds a Bachelor’s degree
in Kinesiology and a Master’s degree in Educational Organization and Leadership
from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he also competed in
football and track and field. He later joined the Illinois coaching staff,
serving as an Operations/Recruiting Assistant and then Defensive Graduate
Assistant. He was part of the coaching staff that won the 2001 Big Ten
Championship.
Coach Williams has been married to Dr. Alveda J. Williams for 25 years.
Together, they have two children—Janai (22) and James III (18).
